DAY 6 OF 12 DAY JOURNEY: UNLOCKING THE IDENTITY OF JESUS CHRIST

God in the Flesh (John 1:1–14)

Introduction: God in the Flesh

No matter what many may say, God did dwell among us. Though His own disciples walked with Him and His creation witnessed His works, many still denied His existence. Yet God, in His infinite mercy, chose not to remain distant or hidden. He stepped down from His mercy seat and entered the world clothed in flesh, so that humanity could see, hear, and encounter His Spirit moving throughout the earth.

As we journey through the Scriptures and break down these chapters, we will discover the Light in the midst of darkness—the Light that shined where hope seemed lost. This was not a distant rescue, but a personal one. God came near. He walked among us. He touched the broken, restored the rejected, and revealed the heart of the Father through His Son.
The Light that shined in darkness came to a lost world, not to condemn it, but to save it. By walking among us, Jesus revealed that God’s desire was never separation, but restoration—God with us, dwelling among His people.

Lets focus on this powerful chapter! Let’s break down John 1:1–14 verse by verse, focusing on the truth that Jesus is God in the flesh — the Word made manifest among us.

 1. The Word Was Eternal (v.1–2)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.”

  • “In the beginning” → takes us back to Genesis 1:1.
  • The Word (Logos) = Christ, pre-existent, eternal.
  • With God = distinct in personhood.
  • as God = fully divine.
  • Jesus is not a created being — He IS God, co-eternal with the Father.

2. The Word as Creator (v.3)

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

  • Jesus is the active agent of creation (Colossians 1:16).
  • Nothing exists apart from Him.
  • He is not just part of creation — He is the Creator.

3. The Word is Life and Light (v.4–5)

In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

  • Life → spiritual and eternal life.
  • Light → truth, revelation, salvation.
  • Darkness = sin and unbelief.
  • Darkness cannot overpower the light.

4. The Witness of John (v.6–8)

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.”

  • John the Baptist was not the Light, but a witness to it.
  • His mission = to point people to Jesus, not to himself.

5. The True Light for All (v.9)

"That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

  • Jesus is the true Light — not false religion, not philosophy.
  • He brings illumination to every person.
  • Whether accepted or rejected, His light shines universally.

6. The Rejection and Reception (v.10–12)

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”

  • Creator entered His own creation.
  • Rejected by the world — even His own people (Israel).
  • But those who receive Him are given authority to become children of God.

7. Born of God, Not of Flesh (v.13)

“Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

  • Salvation is not by natural birth, effort, or human decision.
  • It is a spiritual birth (John 3:3–7).
  • Becoming a child of God = being born again by the Spirit.

8. The Word Became Flesh (v.14)

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

  • Incarnation: The eternal Word took on human flesh.
  • “Dwelt among us” = literally “tabernacled” → God pitched His tent with humanity (like God’s presence in the tabernacle).
  • We saw His glory: not earthly power, but divine grace and truth.
  • Jesus = God in human form, the perfect revelation of the Father (John 14:9).

Summary

  • John 1:1–2 → Jesus is eternal, divine, with God and is God.
  • John 1:3–5 → Jesus is the Creator, source of life and light.
  • John 1:6–8 → John the Baptist pointed to Him, not himself.
  • John 1:9–13 → Some reject, but those who receive Him become children of God by new birth.
  • John 1:14 → The climax → The Word became flesh. God Himself stepped into humanity to reveal His glory through Jesus Christ.

 ✅ Teaching Point:

John 1:1–14 shows us that Jesus is not just a teacher, prophet, or miracle-worker. He is God Himself, clothed in flesh, who came to bring light, life, and adoption into God’s family.

Closing Reflection: God With Us

As we reflect on this truth, we are reminded that God did not remain distant from our pain, our confusion, or our brokenness. He chose to step into time, into flesh, and into the very places where darkness once ruled. The Light did not avoid the shadows—it entered them.

Jesus did not come unannounced, nor did He come without authority. He was named by Heaven, sent for Earth, and revealed exactly as God intended. His presence among us was not simply a moment in history, but an eternal invitation—an invitation to see, to believe, and to be restored.

The same God who walked among the disciples still walks with us today. The same Light that shined in Galilee still shines into our darkest places. And just as many once stood face to face with God and did not recognize Him, we are called now to open our eyes, soften our hearts, and receive what Heaven has already revealed.

God is still with us. The Light still shines. And salvation is still reaching for those willing to receive it.
